Biography
Mahala Jewellery is designed by 37 yr old Stephanie Rose who creates the range from her studio in beachside Newcastle, 2hrs north of Sydney. Stephanie completed a degree in architecture in 1993, worked for a Sydney firm of architects before completing a teaching qualification in 1997. For ten years Stephanie worked as a teacher but kept her hand in design as an amateur jeweller. It was her travels through Europe, China and India that inspired her to take on designing jewellery as a career. The Mahala Jewellery label was launched in 2007.
Philosophy
“Mahala is a Native American word that means woman. It is appropriate for what I do because I have always gained artistic inspiration from other times and cultures whether it be Aboriginal art, traditional African dress, Victorian and Art Nouveau jewellery or traditional Indian and Nepalese adornments. I love design and believe in the power of jewellery to express individuality and lift the spirit. My aim is to fuse cultures and colours in a way that works for modern Australian women.”
Range
Mahala Jewellery produces small ranges of jewellery sourcing beautiful components from all over the world. The jewellery can be intricate but it is all handcrafted in the Newcastle studio. Gemstones, freshwater pearls, gold vermeil, Swarovski crystal, shell, vintage brass filigree and resin are some of the high quality materials used in the Mahala collections.
