Mahala Jewellery is designed by Stephanie Leonard from her studio in Newcastle, 2 hrs north of Sydney.

Stephanie has worked in education, fashion and design since completing an architecture degree in 1993. She began experimenting with the art of jewellery but it was her travels through Europe, China and India that laid a path to designing her own label.

“I have always gained artistic inspiration from traditional cultures. I love contemporary Aboriginal art. I also have African women friends in Australia and I have always admired the vibrancy of their dress. Travelling through India I was taken by the beauty of their women. The intensity of the colour in their saris and gold bangles was stunning against the dry landscape.”

“I love mixing strong elements like Tibetan silver pieces, resin or African bone and glass beads with feminine elements like Czech glass beads, shell beads, vintage charms and gemstones (jade, agate, coral, turquoise, rose quartz). I aim to fuse cultures and colours in a way that works for modern, Australian women.”

All pieces are handcrafted to the highest standards using beautiful, quality beads, silk cord and gold, silver and brass filigree castings. Our objective is to provide jewellery that will be enjoyed and cherished for years to come.
